1.1 Background of the Study
Cultural reawakening is a process by which communities rediscover, preserve, and celebrate their cultural practices, traditions, and heritage. In Daura Local Government Area (LGA) of Katsina State, the cultural practices of the Hausa-Fulani people—such as traditional dances, attire, festivals, and rituals—have faced challenges due to modernization and the encroachment of global cultures. Photography, as a powerful visual medium, can play a pivotal role in documenting and promoting cultural practices, helping to instigate a cultural revival. By capturing the vibrancy and uniqueness of local traditions, photography can create a visual archive that fosters pride and encourages younger generations to embrace their cultural heritage. This study explores how photography contributes to the cultural reawakening in Daura LGA, assessing its impact on the preservation and promotion of local traditions.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
While Daura LGA has a rich cultural heritage, many traditional practices and customs are at risk of fading away due to the influence of modernization and urbanization. There is a need for greater efforts to document and promote these traditions to ensure their survival. Photography, with its ability to capture cultural moments, can help to preserve and revitalize these practices. However, the role of photography in cultural reawakening in Daura LGA remains underexplored. This study seeks to investigate how photography can contribute to the revival and promotion of cultural traditions in the region.
